Silicone mold claims should be evaluated using documentation for the exact finished material—not a generic description of silicone. Use this guide to understand common terms and the questions to ask before production.

Separate three commonly confused claims

Each term describes a different part of the material conversation. None replaces a review of the exact finished mold and its intended use.

Cure system

Platinum-cured silicone

Platinum-cured silicone uses a platinum-catalyzed addition-cure system to crosslink the silicone. The cure method can influence processing and finished-material properties, but the phrase does not by itself prove that every formulation or finished mold is suitable for food contact.

Commercial term

Food grade

Food grade is a general commercial term. Ask which food-contact regulation, test method, or supplier declaration applies to the exact material and finished article. Do not treat the phrase as a blanket approval for every use.

Material question

BPA and silicone

BPA is commonly associated with certain polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins, not the silicone polymer itself. Buyers should still request documentation for the complete finished silicone formulation, including additives and colorants.

Request documentation for the exact mold

The useful document set depends on the product, market, and process. These six items are a practical commercial starting point.

Why mold design and process still matter

Material quality is one part of performance. Release, durability, and consistency depend on the complete mold and production system.

Five questions to ask before ordering

  1. What exact silicone material, cure system, additives, and colorants are used in the finished mold?
  2. What food-contact declarations, specifications, or supporting test reports are available?
  3. What operating, temperature, cleaning, chemical, drying, and storage limits apply?
  4. Is the mold designed for manual filling, pour-and-scrape production, or a verified depositor setup?
  5. Has filling, cooling, release, cleaning, handling, and equipment fit been tested under the intended process?
